I love the traditional bright reds and greens of Christmas but I also love a touch of warm and cozy. Which is why I went with a variation on the traditional colors with my Christmas decor, specifically with the tree ornaments. I chose colors that are a bit more muted and a little deeper. Deep reds (retailers like to call it burgundy), dark teal, mustard yellow, bronze and burnt orange ended up being the perfect play here.
Not going to lie, it took some time to find the exact colors I was looking for. I wouldn’t say these are necessarily popular Christmas colors…yet, so I bought some in-store and some online. If I couldn’t find the link to an exact product I used, I made sure to include something similar.
I love a real tree but I’ve started putting my tree up earlier every year so I figured it was time to go the faux route. I snagged this Faux tree last year and it has been great! It’s a 7.5′ dunhill fir. I could have gone with a taller one because we have high ceilings but this is the perfect height for me to decorate without having to get on a ladder.
For the ornaments, I went with a variety of finishes – matte, shiny, textured. There’s no wrong answer here but I feel like the different finishes give the tree some depth. Here are the details…
Peacock teal ornaments– These are a little darker than regular teal. That’s the key to making it cozy and not Candyland.
Here’s another option. This variety pack has some true green in it but I think it would work perfectly. And I think this glass option is stunning – a little pricer but you would only need a few.
Clear and gold – I found the clear and gold elements add some softness and dimension. These are also on the larger side at 4″ so they provide some variety within the tree.
Velvet red matte – The matte offsets the shiny and glittery ornaments beautifully.
Wine red – This mix would be beautiful too!
Deep red – but with glitter.
Mustard yellow – aka matte gold. Again, the darker, muted color helps with the coziness.
Bronze – Here’s an option that’s more mocha than orange. This option is super pretty too.
Gold geometric star tree topper – Pretty and not distracting.
I think the matte ornaments offset the glittery ornaments really well. But the best part is, that’s up to you. If you want more sparkle – you do you!
I do like to keep a bit of a western theme so I included some western ornaments throughout the tree as well. Here are some cute cowboy hat ornaments.
And yes, I was watching Home Alone while decorating. I didn’t remove all of my year-round decor. We have a western-ish theme around the house so I kept the pictures, cowboy hats, pillows, etc. Found those black and white Christmas tree pillows at Hobby Lobby last year. I haven’t seen them yet this year but I found some great and inexpensive alternatives here! Such a simple and cute addition.
I’m a sucker for the wooden blocks with Christmas sayings. They would probably be easy enough to make but if you’re not the crafty type, something like this Merry Christmas wood block will work just fine for a side table or console.
I found this Santa countdown at At Home a couple of years ago. I couldn’t find this exact model online (he might be in-store) but I thought this one was cute with the baby reindeer! And this truck – so adorable!
And as a side note, if you’re looking for good storage options for your crap that accumulates in the living room, I highly recommend the woven baskets that I have under the coffee table and on the bottom shelf of the TV stand.
Beige and black woven storage baskets are the ones under the coffee table. And Black Cotton rope woven storage baskets are under the TV stand.
I also found the best faux cedar wreaths on Etsy (the one hanging over the window). Excellent quality, durable and I used this deep red velvet ribbon to tie them up.
We have a yellow lab, named General and a tabby cat named Nugget. I found both of these personalized stockings on Etsy. This is Nugget’s burlap stocking. And this is General’s. Both of these sellers were great and they arrived pretty quickly.
Again, I can’t help myself with the wooden blocks. They’re so versatile. I added this Green and black checkered napkin under it for some contrast. I also use those napkins for my Christmas dinner table settings.
My parents usually come to Fort Worth to spend Christmas with us so I got them their own stockings. These personalized embroidered knit stockings turned out perfect! The quality is really nice, you can choose from different colors and fonts, they arrived very quickly and were under $20 each.
And since we don’t have a fireplace, I had to improvise and hang them on this adorable stocking hanger. I already had a hook in the wall for my hat so it worked out great. I got this one from At Home in-store but I love this one – it’s pretty and understated.
I filled some empty space with a flocked faux pine I found on sale at Hobby Lobby. But there are plenty of potted mini tree options out there, like these. I added some mini battery powered fairy lights too. They’re cheap and come in a bunch of colors so they’re great for wreaths, garland, table decor, etc.
I also like to have a few fuzzy Christmas themed throw blankets laying around for people to grab. These blankets are so perfect and come in a variety of patterns and colors. I have that large woven basket out all year, I just swap out the blankets to match the season. And I found the wooden directional sign at At Home. They have way more options in-store!
I also found this Frosted blue spruce, similar to these, for the coffee table. I placed it in an old candle jar from Jackson Vaughn since it went with my color scheme. Side note: I can not recommend all of the candles from them enough! You will not be disappointed, even if you buy without smelling. You can also go the natural route if you want your home to smell like the holidays with a simmer pot.
And another great thing to include in table decor are bottle brush trees. You can find them in almost every color and size and they’re very inexpensive. I put the bottle brush tree in a galvanized tin and that helped provide more support for the tree.
